Houston has made an impressive leap on the roster of top 20 U.S. cities where people are relocating, marking a significant shift in migration trends. The southern states, grappling with a surge in new residents, have seen Houston ascend seven positions to secure the coveted No. 5 spot on PODS Enterprises’ 2023 U.S. annual moving trends report. This meteoric rise places Houston ahead of all other Texan cities.
The driving force behind this migration phenomenon, as highlighted by PODS, is primarily economic. An overwhelming majority of this year’s top 20 destinations are nestled in the South, lured by the allure of states boasting low tax rates, balmy climates, and budget-friendly housing. This marks a striking departure from the previous year, where remote work opportunities and proximity to loved ones were the prevailing factors.
Rising living costs and housing prices have also played a pivotal role, influencing the ranking shuffle and notable omissions from this year’s list. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina-Wilmington, North Carolina, seized the throne as the new No. 1 destination, displacing Sarasota, Florida. The allure of Myrtle Beach-Wilmington lies in its more affordable cost of living compared to Florida, while still offering an enviable coastal quality of life.
Florida remains a relocation hotspot, reigning supreme as the top state for migrations. This year’s PODS report reveals that six of its metropolitan areas, including Sarasota, Orlando, and Ocala, have secured spots in the top 20. However, one notable absentee from this year’s list is Austin, Texas, which had previously held the No. 16 position.
The omission of Austin raises eyebrows and hints at a potential slowing of the once-booming growth that characterized the city. PODS emphasizes this in their report, noting it as a significant development worth monitoring.
